Motto: Promoting Human Dignity Through Education and Sports.
Education plays a pivotal role in the advancement of a society and serves as a catalyst for enduring development in various aspects. As Nelson Mandela eloquently stated, "Education is the most potent weapon one can wield to enact change in the world." Regrettably, the education sector in Nigeria has long grappled with persistent challenges dating back to the colonial era, hindering the realization of the country's Universal Basic Education objectives. These obstacles include insufficient financial allocations from the federal, state, and local governments, resulting in a scarcity of qualified personnel, inadequate infrastructure, substandard facilities in public schools, meager salaries, and untrained educators. However Private sector interventions have taken the form of collaborations and sponsorships to address these issues.
Organizations like the United Organization for Education and Sports Development Nigeria have implemented a comprehensive education program for pupils and students in dilapidated primary and secondary schools, with a particular emphasis on empowering the girl child. Through a multifaceted approach encompassing initiatives such as the Adopt-A-School Program, Infrastructure Development, Teacher Capacity Enhancement, School-Based Management Committees, Scholarships, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Centers, and Early Childhood Care and Development, UOESD is poised to revolutionize primary education in numerous communities. The foundation is currently tackling fundamental issues of inclusivity, equity, quality education, and infrastructure enhancement in numerous schools.
UOESD aims to establish a sustainable and replicable educational model in many primary and secondary schools and universities nationwide, ultimately elevating the standard of basic education in Nigeria.Presently, the foundation has successfully adopted 50 primary schools across 15 states spanning the six geo-political zones in Nigeria, including Enugu, Anambra, Bauchi, Kano, Cross River, Ebonyi, Edo, Abia, FCT, Kaduna, Bauchi, Kwara, Lagos, Kano, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau, Delta, Imo, and Taraba, with plans to adopt an additional 100 schools by 2030 and beyond.
According to reports by the British Council and World Bank, Nigeria has the highest number of out-of-school children globally. Currently, the expected enrollment in Nigerian primary schools stands at 35 million, yet the actual enrollment figure is 24.5 million, resulting in a shortfall of 10.5 million (British Council Nigeria, 2012; World Bank, 2008). To date, the United Organization for Education and Sports Development Nigeria has successfully facilitated access to quality primary education with scholarships for over 50,000 previously out-of-school children in Nigeria and overseas. In a bid to enhance the learning experience and ensure that today's children are proficient in utilizing technology, the foundation has launched the Information Communications and Technology Center initiative. This initiative entails equipping selected schools with ICT centers staffed by trained teachers to facilitate learning. These centers are equipped with desktop computers, laptops, projectors, printers, TVs, all powered by solar energy. The ICT scheme aims to expose pupils and students to computer education and other technological advancements. To date, the foundation has established 19 ICT centers in various schools and plans to set up a total of 95 centers by 2030. Recently, the foundation collaborated with Marwadi University India, Cyprus West University, Rauf Denkas University Turkey, and others to introduce the Global Scholarship initiative, awarding foreign scholarships to exceptional underprivileged students through national competitions. Over 220 students have benefited from this initiative thus far. In 2019, UOESD Nigeria partnered with Educate-a-Child India to enroll 1,000 out-of-school children in primary education in Nigeria by 2020. To date, the foundation has achieved a 26% success rate, enrolling 6,000 pupils. Recognizing that children are the future leaders, UOESD Nigeria acknowledges that a child's cognitive development is significantly influenced by their environment. As the primary avenue for classroom learning, the foundation underscores the vital importance of primary education. Our values encapsulate the fundamental principles that define our organization. They embody our core beliefs, guiding our actions, decisions, and interactions to foster trust-based relationships with partners and beneficiaries. These values underpin our commitment to serving our communities, collaboratively working towards creating a more equitable, sustainable, and peaceful world.
